Unboxing the Future: Designing for Every Hand

Accessibility in product packaging is no longer a secondary consideration. It has become a core design principle that shapes how consumers interact with products in everyday life. As global audiences grow more diverse, brands are being challenged to design packaging that works for everyone, not just the average user.

In response to this shift, the World Packaging Organisation (WPO), in partnership with the Australasian Institute of Packaging (AIP), has announced a specialized online course titled “Unboxing Accessibility: How to Design Accessible & Inclusive Packaging.” This virtual workshop is designed to help industry professionals rethink packaging from an inclusive, human-centered perspective.

Why Accessibility in Packaging Matters

For millions of consumers, opening a package or reading essential product information is not a simple task. Elderly users often struggle with tight seals and rigid materials, while visually impaired consumers may find labels difficult or impossible to read. These barriers create frustration and exclusion, commonly known as “wrap rage.”

Inclusive packaging design addresses these challenges by prioritizing usability, clarity, and ease of interaction. When packaging is designed with accessibility in mind, brands benefit from improved customer experience, broader market reach, and stronger consumer trust. Accessibility is no longer just good ethics. It is good business.

Attendees will gain insights into accessible materials, intuitive opening systems, tactile and readable labeling, and emerging best practices that make packaging easier to handle, open, and understand.

Designing Packaging for the Future

Accessible packaging is not about lowering design standards. It is about elevating them. By designing with empathy and inclusivity, brands position themselves for long-term relevance in a rapidly changing global market.
